What is an automatic transmission?
An automatic transmission is a type of gearbox that automatically changes the vehicle's gears, allowing the driver to operate the car without manually shifting gears.
How does an automatic transmission work?
It uses a complex system of hydraulics, electronics, and mechanical components to shift gears based on the vehicle’s speed, load, and engine RPM.
What are the signs that my automatic transmission needs repairs?
Common signs include slipping gears, delayed or rough shifting, unusual noises (such as grinding or whining), a burning smell, and leaking transmission fluid. A transmission service does not fix problems. If you have any of these faults, it more than likely too late for a service.
How often should I service my automatic transmission?
Typically, automatic transmissions should be serviced due to Australian conditions every 20,000 to 40,000 kilometres, but it’s best to follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
What is the difference between a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and a traditional automatic transmission?
A CVT uses a belt and pulley system to provide a continuous range of gear ratios, offering smoother acceleration and better fuel efficiency, whereas traditional automatics have a set number of gears.
What is the difference between a dual clutch transmission (DSG/DCT) and a traditional automatic transmission?
A Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), also known as a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG), differs from a traditional automatic transmission in its use of two clutches for faster and smoother gear changes, enhancing performance and efficiency. While DCTs offer quicker, more precise shifts, making them ideal for performance cars, traditional automatics use a torque converter and planetary gears, providing smoother and more comfortable driving suitable for everyday use.
Can I upgrade my car's manual transmission to an automatic transmission?
Sometimes, but it can be complex and expensive, involving modifications to the transmission, drivetrain, and electronic systems. This is not a service that we provide.
What are the common causes of automatic transmission failure?
Common causes include low or dirty transmission fluid, worn-out or broken parts, overheating, and lack of regular maintenance.
How long does an automatic transmission typically last?
This is subjective to the driver and maintenance. We see transmissions or mechatronics fail from around 40,000km-300,000km.
What should I do if my transmission is slipping or making strange noises?
Call us to book in a diagnosis.
How do I know which type of transmission my vehicle has?
We’ll be able to tell you if you can not find it on Google.
What is involved in a typical transmission service?
In most cases, a transmission service involves, road testing, scanning for diagnostic trouble codes, draining transmission fluid, changing the filter, changing the pan gasket, refilling with new transmission fluid, performing basic settings through the scanner and road testing. Please note, we will not perform a transmission service on vehicles over 150,000km if they can not provide a record of previous transmission servicing. Most of the time, by changing the fluid in a worn transmission is cause faults that weren’t previously there.
Can a transmission service prevent future problems?
Yes it can, if the transmission does not have problems already, however, we will not perform a transmission service on vehicles over 150,000km if they can not provide a record of previous transmission servicing. Most of the time, by changing the fluid in a worn transmission is cause faults that weren’t previously there.
Can I check my transmission fluid myself, and how do I do it?
Not anymore, most types of modern transmissions do not have a dipstick to check.
What is the cost of a typical transmission repair or rebuild?
Prices vary. Once we have diagnosed the fault we will supply you with a quote to repair.
How long does it take to repair a transmission?
We usually ask for a 2 week turn around from when the job has been approved. If overseas parts are required, it may take longer, however we will keep you updated.
Do you own FluidDrive transmission remanufacturing in Melbourne?
Yes we do, however FluidDrive transmissions are supplied only to our Original Equipment (OE) clients.
Do you offer any transmission performance upgrades or modifications?
We do. Have a look at our Autosport tab or call us to find out more about the transmissions we upgrade and modify.
